Obi Insists on Defamation Charges Against Kenneth Okonkwo

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has vowed to proceed with defamation charges against Nollywood actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo over allegations of corruption during the party’s primary elections.

Obi made this known during an interview on Tuesday, stating that legal action became necessary after Okonkwo insisted he had more allegations to expose in the future.

Recall that Okonkwo had appeared on national television and alleged that House of Representatives aspirants were coerced into paying a N10 million bribe under Obi’s watch to secure tickets, describing the former governor as the “head, stomach, and feet of the criminal gang.”

Reacting, Obi said, “The issue of taking Kenneth Okonkwo to court wouldn’t have arisen if he had stopped at those allegations. But he claimed he still has more he would expose about me in the future. So I am very happy to take him to court so that he can expose me publicly, alongside other Nigerians. If any of them has any criminal allegations against me, they should bring it to court.”

This followed an earlier demand letter from Obi’s legal team, which demanded N5 billion in damages and a public apology from Okonkwo over what they described as false and malicious statements. In response, Okonkwo dismissed the demand, challenging Obi to proceed with the lawsuit.
