UN-Accredited Rights Body Urges Plateau Govt to Withdraw Shoot-on-Sight Directive Against Pastoralists

In a statement signed by Country Director Amb. Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, the UN ECOSOC-accredited body commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang for upholding rule of law and judicial independence but expressed grave concern over earlier statements endorsing lethal force.

The group described such directives as dangerous and inconsistent with constitutional rights, warning that extrajudicial measures raise serious concerns about the right to life and due process under Nigerian law.

While supporting efforts to protect farmers and community assets, IHRC-RFT Global insisted that violations of anti-open grazing laws must be addressed through lawful procedures—arrest, investigation, prosecution, and court determination—rather than summary execution.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to peace-building and peaceful coexistence across Plateau State and Nigeria, urging the government to align all security measures with constitutional safeguards and international human rights standards.

The warning follows recent tensions in Jos North Local Government Area over farmer-herder conflicts and a contested court judgment on indigeneship rights.
