Ghana opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama, relying on defensive discipline and a solitary second-half strike to secure all three points.
The Black Stars dominated possession early but struggled to break down a resolute Panamanian defence. Coach Chris Hughton’s side maintained patience, with midfielders Thomas Partey and Mohammed Kudus controlling tempo without creating clear-cut chances.
The breakthrough came in the 67th minute when substitute Jordan Ayew latched onto a loose ball in the box and fired past the Panama goalkeeper. The goal rewarded Ghana’s persistent pressure and forced Panama to chase the game.
Panama responded with increased attacking intent, testing Ghana’s backline through counter-attacks. Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi produced two crucial saves in the final 15 minutes to preserve the lead.
Defender Alexander Djiku led a composed defensive unit that limited Panama to speculative efforts, while wing-back Gideon Mensah neutralised threats down the flanks.
Hughton praised his team’s maturity post-match, noting the importance of winning without playing at full capacity. Ghana next face tougher group opponents and will need improved attacking output.
The victory marks Ghana’s fourth consecutive World Cup opening match win.
