The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has elected Otunba Salimon Akanni Oladiti as its new National President .
Oladiti, previously a National Trustee of the union, was elected alongside 15 other national officers during the union’s 6th Quadrennial Delegates Conference held in Lagos on Friday, April 24, 2026 .
Comrade Akin Oladejo, former Chairman of the Oil and Gas Supply Branch, was elected Deputy President .
The election was conducted unopposed, with all candidates emerging through a consensus arrangement . This marks a historic milestone, as Oladiti is the first member of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch to ascend to the presidency of NUPENG .
Minister Charges New Leadership
Delivering a goodwill message at the conference, Minister of Labour and Employment, Honourable Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, urged the new president to build on the legacies of his predecessor, Comrade Williams Akporeha .
Represented by the Director of Trade Union Services and Industrial Relations, Falonipe Amos, the minister commended Akporeha’s “commitment to constructive dialogue while agitating for workers’ welfare” and urged the new executive to sustain the template of cordial industrial relations .
In his acceptance speech, Oladiti assured members that his leadership would not disappoint, pledging to “strengthen the union and uphold the dignity of labour” .
The outgoing president, Comrade Williams Akporeha, bowed out after serving two consecutive terms of eight years .
