Police Launch Violent Crime Response Unit in Kano, Pledge Human Rights Respect

The Nigeria Police Force has inaugurated its newly formed Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in Kano State, a specialized squad designed to tackle kidnapping, armed robbery, and other serious crimes while respecting the fundamental rights of citizens.

The launch of the Kano VCRU followed the IGP’s directive dissolving all tactical teams nationwide and consolidating them into this single, streamlined formation to “restore professionalism, eliminate duplications of functions, and ensure the sanctity of human rights,” according to a statement by the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa .

The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, while inaugurating the unit, said the VCRU was created “in response to the yearnings of the general public to maintain the sanctity of the rights of citizens to human dignity, freedom of movement, and right to life as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended)” .

Bakori gave the VCRU personnel a strong warning against rights abuses, stating that anyone found violating the rules of engagement or harassing innocent Nigerians would not be spared . He noted that officers of the defunct tactical units had been carefully screened and selected for retraining to ensure that only disciplined officers serve in the new squad.

The statement added that “the new VCRU will be polite, civil, firm and act within the law, operate strictly on intelligence and focus strictly on violent crimes.”

The VCRU is part of the Police Force’s broader effort to reform the internal security architecture and rebuild public trust in law enforcement .
