Osun Police Apologise to NUJ, IPC Over Journalist Olalekan Akindoju’s Unlawful Arrest

The Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the International Press Centre (IPC) have secured a formal apology from the Osun State Police Command following the arrest and detention of union secretary Olalekan Akindoju.

Police Public Relations Officer DSP Abiodun Ojelabi conveyed the apology during a live programme on Rave 91.7FM, speaking on behalf of Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan. He said the command regretted the incident and had launched an investigation into the conduct of the operatives involved.

Akindoju, who is also Head of News and Current Affairs at Rave 91.7FM/WSTV, was arrested at his Osogbo residence on June 11 by armed officers who jumped his fence at about 6 a.m. Despite presenting his journalist identity card, he was handcuffed, had his phone confiscated, and was detained for several hours at police headquarters.

He was released following interventions by colleagues, the NUJ, and other stakeholders. Police later explained the arrest resulted from mistaken identity during an operation targeting suspected criminals.

The incident drew widespread criticism from media organisations and civil society groups. The Osun NUJ demanded a public apology for the embarrassment caused, while the IPC condemned the detention and urged accountability for the officers involved.
