INEC Inspects, Distributes Sensitive Materials for Rivers South-East Bye-Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission has commenced distribution of sensitive materials for Saturday’s Rivers South-East Senatorial District bye-election, with 858,573 registered voters expected at the polls.

The election fills the vacancy created by the death of Senator Barry Mpigi in February at a London hospital.

Ballot papers and result sheets were inspected Thursday at the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Port Harcourt zonal headquarters by party representatives from Action Alliance, APC, Labour Party and PDP before onward distribution.

Resident Electoral Commissioner Johnson Sinikiem assured stakeholders that materials were intact and untampered.

“Party agents are free to inspect them, and once there are no objections, they will be distributed to local governments and RAC centres,” he stated.

The bye-election covers seven local government areas: Khana, Gokana, Tai, Eleme, Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro and Oyigbo, across 1,629 polling units.

Materials will be moved to designated locations ahead of Saturday’s poll.
