FG Orders FCCPC to Probe X, Meta, AI Firms Over Anti-Competition Allegations

The Federal Government has directed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to investigate X (formerly Twitter), Meta, Alphabet, and several Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) firms over allegations of anti-competitive practices affecting Nigeria’s media industry.

CDA News Nigeria reports that the directive followed a joint petition submitted to the Presidency by the Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO), comprising the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) and the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).

According to a statement issued by the FCCPC, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, conveyed the directive in a letter requesting the commission to investigate the allegations.

The petition alleges that Meta, Alphabet, X and some Generative AI platforms may have engaged in practices that undermine fair competition, affect the commercial viability of Nigerian media organisations and impact the rights of publishers and content creators.

The FCCPC said its investigation would examine claims of market dominance, the alleged unauthorised scraping and commercial use of copyrighted news content to train AI models, and concerns over the lack of fair commercial agreements between global technology firms and Nigerian publishers.

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the FCCPC, Mr. Tunji Bello, assured that the commission would conduct an independent, transparent, and evidence-based investigation.
