The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit the names of their presidential and National Assembly candidates for the 2027 General Election, providing parties with additional time to complete their nomination processes.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the extension follows requests from political parties seeking more time to conclude internal processes and upload candidates’ details to the commission’s nomination portal. The revised deadline is expected to ease pressure on parties that were racing to beat the initial submission date.
The extension comes after weeks of intense political activities across the country, with major parties conducting primaries and resolving disputes arising from the nomination of candidates. Before the extension, political parties had been under pressure to meet the original deadline set by the electoral umpire.
CDA News Nigeria reports that INEC urged political parties to utilize the additional time to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the Commission’s guidelines, stressing that no further extensions should be expected after the revised deadline.
The development is expected to provide relief to several political parties while allowing the Commission to proceed with other activities outlined in the timetable for the 2027 General Election.
