The Court of Appeal has reserved judgment in the legal dispute over the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the appellate court concluded hearing arguments from the parties involved and announced that judgment would be delivered on a date to be communicated to all parties.
The appeal challenges the legality of INEC’s decision to deregister the affected political parties, with the appellants urging the court to overturn the action. Counsel for the parties argued that the deregistration did not comply with constitutional and statutory provisions governing political parties in Nigeria.
On its part, INEC defended its position, maintaining that its actions were taken in accordance with its constitutional powers and relevant electoral laws.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the outcome of the appeal is expected to have significant implications for Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election. Political observers say the court’s decision could clarify the scope of INEC’s authority regarding the registration and deregistration of political parties.
