The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has plunged into a fresh crisis, suspending the screening of aspirants for its upcoming national convention just one day before it was due to begin. The party cited “unforeseen circumstances” for the sudden postponement, throwing its internal electoral process into confusion.
The delay coincides with a public outburst from former Governor Sule Lamido, a chairmanship aspirant, who was unable to purchase nomination forms at the party’s Abuja headquarters. Lamido accused party leaders of hijacking the process and vowed to go to court if blocked from contesting.
In a further sign of turmoil, a group of over 20 PDP federal lawmakers threatened to defect from the party. They allege a plot to install a nominee of an All Progressives Congress (APC) governor into the powerful position of National Woman Leader, calling it an “unforgivable betrayal.”
The series of events casts a shadow over the party’s preparations for its crucial November 2025 Elective National Convention in Ibadan, where it hopes to reorganize its leadership ahead of the next general elections
