President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces as part of efforts to improve troop welfare and strengthen national security.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit about 250,000 military personnel across the country.
According to a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the highest percentage increases will go to junior personnel. Officers above the rank of colonel will receive a 30 per cent increase, personnel from colonel to warrant officer will receive 50 per cent, while those from private to staff sergeant will enjoy an 80 per cent salary boost.
The new pay package will increase the annual wage bill for the armed forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, representing an additional ₦264 billion.
President Tinubu said the decision recognises the sacrifices made by military personnel in combating terrorism, banditry and kidnapping. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to troop welfare, military modernisation and equipping the armed forces with advanced weapons and technology.
CDA News gathered that the Federal Government described the salary review as part of its broader strategy to strengthen security and support those protecting the nation.
