Senate Accelerates Screening of New Service Chiefs to Wednesday

In a swift reversal, the Nigerian Senate has rescheduled the screening of newly appointed Service Chiefs to Wednesday, October 29. The move aims to expedite the confirmation process and ensure no gaps in the nation’s security leadership.

The decision followed a formal request from President Bola Tinubu, read at Tuesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The President’s letter urged “expeditious consideration” to maintain effective coordination within the security architecture.

Akpabio secured the Senate’s consent to fast-track the screening, emphasizing the need for the military chiefs to assume their duties without delay. The Committee of the Whole is now set to conduct the confirmation exercise on Wednesday.

This development comes days after President Tinubu appointed General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff, alongside other new service heads, in a major reshuffle of the military high command.
