The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has renewed its demand for a new minimum wage, saying the current **₦70,000 minimum wage** is no longer enough to meet the needs of Nigerian workers.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the labour movement is calling for a review of workers’ pay amid rising prices of food, transportation, housing and other essential goods and services.
CDA News gathered from the report that the NLC believes the present wage has lost significant purchasing power due to the continued increase in the cost of living.
The union is therefore seeking fresh discussions with the Federal Government and other stakeholders on a wage structure that reflects current economic realities.
The **NLC demands new minimum wage** position comes about two years after the Federal Government approved ₦70,000 as Nigeria’s new national minimum wage, replacing the former ₦30,000 wage.
Labour leaders have continued to argue that workers need better wages to cope with inflation and other economic pressures affecting households across the country.
The latest demand is expected to generate further discussions between government, organised labour and employers on workers’ welfare and the sustainability of the current minimum wage.
