UTURU — The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Abia State University (ABSU) chapter, has vowed to sustain its ongoing indefinite strike until the university management recalls Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze, who was suspended over social media posts on staff welfare.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the chapter chairman, Dr Chidi Mbah, made the declaration while speaking on the suspension, the ongoing industrial action, and the welfare of university lecturers. ASUU-ABSU had earlier embarked on an indefinite strike on August 11, 2026, over the non-implementation of the 2025 salary structure, unpaid Earned Academic Allowances since 2009, and promotion arrears.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Professor Nwaeze of the Department of Economics was suspended on August 13, 2026, over posts deemed “inimical to the interests of the University” and “uncomplimentary” to its Visitor, Governor Alex Otti. The professor had claimed that some professors at ABSU earn less than ₦400,000 monthly, while commercial tricycle (Keke) riders earn more.
The union’s resolve to sustain the strike until Nwaeze’s reinstatement adds a new dimension to the ongoing industrial action. The university management has stated that an investigative panel has been constituted to examine the matter. However, ASUU-ABSU insists that the suspension was an act of victimisation aimed at silencing a voice that spoke truth to power about the deteriorating welfare of academic staff.
