Adamawa Police Order Investigation into Alleged Arrests, Bail Extortion Against DPO

YOLA — The Adamawa State Police Command has ordered an investigation into allegations of arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention, and bail extortion against the Divisional Police Officer of Jambutu Division.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Command, in a statement on its X handle on Saturday by its Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, responded to a publication titled “Adamawa Residents Demand Removal of Jambutu DPO Over Alleged Arbitrary Arrests, Bail Extortion.” The Command stated it takes the allegations seriously and does not condone arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention, extortion, or any form of professional misconduct by its personnel.

CDA News Nigeria reports that the Commissioner of Police has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Hamzat Tambai, to conduct a thorough and discreet investigation into the allegations. The Command reiterated that bail is free and warned police officers against demanding money from members of the public in exchange for bail.

The police urged anyone with information relating to the allegations to come forward and assist the investigation by providing specific details and available evidence to the SCID headquarters in Yola or the nearest police formation. The Command reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for the rights of citizens.
