One person has died, and many others have been injured following a fresh communal land clash between Aguleri and Umuoba Anam in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State.
CDA News Nigeria reports that residents reportedly sustained gunshot and machete injuries, and a microfinance bank in Aguleri was reportedly set ablaze. The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, first denied reports of the incident, then confirmed one death and several injuries, and said officers had been deployed to restore order.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, and the Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Oji Ama, later visited the communities and warned residents against any action that could threaten public order. The police said the delegation confirmed that a victim had suffered fatal injuries and assessed the property damage. Residents were urged to stay calm, avoid actions that could worsen the situation,n and give security agencies credible, timely information. The police added that measures were being put in place to stabilise the affected areas.
A former member of the House of Representatives for Anambra East and West, Chief Chinedu Obidigwe, the APGA candidate in the 2027 election, has begun dialogue with leaders of both communities. He described the dispute as one between two villages, one in Anam and one in Aguleri, and warned against turning it into a conflict between the wider communities.
The police said efforts are also underway to address the root issues through dialogue and other lawful channels. No arrests had been announced at the time of filing.
