Onuigbo Commends Zulum’s Directive on Direct LG Funding

A member of the Governing Board of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Rep. Sir Sam Onuigbo, has commended Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum for ordering the direct payment of federal allocations to the 27 Local Government Councils in the state.

In a letter dated February 2, 2026, Onuigbo described the governor’s directive as a “bold and commendable step” that promotes transparency, accountability, and grassroots development.

He noted that the move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s call for resources to trickle down to the grassroots and reflects Onuigbo’s own longstanding advocacy for local government financial autonomy.

Onuigbo, a former two-term House of Representatives member, expressed optimism that the policy would empower council chairpersons to tackle insecurity, unemployment, and youth restiveness more effectively.
