Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced that his administration has commenced the process of recovering abandoned and underutilized farm settlements across the state.
Speaking during a working visit by the Executive Management Committee of the Anambra-Imo River Basin Development Authority led by its Chairman, Senator Emmanuel Anosike, Governor Otti described agriculture as Nigeria’s mainstay and emphasized the state’s plan to shift from subsistence farming to mechanized commercial agriculture with full value-chain development.
“We have started the process of taking them back, setting them up, getting them to work,” Otti stated, referring to settlements originally established by past leaders like Dr. Michael Okpara but later abandoned.
The Governor expressed readiness to collaborate with the River Basin Authority to achieve food sufficiency and grow Abia’s economy. He directed the Commissioners for Agriculture, Lands, Power and Public Utilities, and other relevant agencies to form a joint implementation team.
Senator Anosike earlier explained that the Authority, which covers the five South-East states, seeks partnership with Abia in agriculture, irrigation, solar energy, and other areas to revive projects like “Anambra-Imo Rice” and related agro-products.
Governor Otti also noted ongoing improvements in the power sector, describing it as central to the state’s development agenda.
