Clergy Call for Bishop Olutayo to Repent, Reconcile with Estranged Wife

A prominent clergywoman, Bishop Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, has publicly called on Bishop Dayo Olutayo, General Overseer of Unity Worship Centre, to repent and reconcile with his estranged wife, Boluwatife Olutayo.

This follows Bishop Olutayo’s introduction of a new wife, Funmilola Akinrinde, during a Thanksgiving service in December 2025, months after reportedly divorcing his wife of 33 years. In his announcement, Olutayo claimed he had “never been married before,” sparking confusion and anger within his congregation and the wider Christian community.

Bishop Adesanya-Davies referenced several scriptures, including Hebrews 13:17 and 1 Timothy 3:2, stressing the biblical standards for marital fidelity and church leadership. She urged Olutayo to voluntarily step down from pastoral oversight, seek reconciliation with his former wife, and submit to spiritual accountability.

The situation has ignited debate on pastoral integrity, marital responsibility, and the moral expectations of church leaders in Nigeria. While some congregants have vowed to leave the church, others await Olutayo’s response to the growing call for repentance and restoration.
