UMUAHIA,ABIA- Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has restated his firm decision to retire from active politics at the end of his tenure, stating that he has no ambition to run for the presidency, vice presidency, or a senatorial seat.
Otti made the clarification in response to a viral video that criticized his recent visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and insinuated he was nursing higher political ambitions.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, on Saturday, the Governor said, “I had said it before, and I want to say it again, that by the time I’m done with governorship, I will retire.”
He emphasized that he came into office with a specific mission and intends to exit the political stage once it is accomplished to give way for younger people. “We are not cut out for those kinds of things,” he said, referencing politicians who cling to lower offices after serving as governor.
On his visit to Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, Otti described it as a humane and administrative intervention, not a political stunt. He explained that as a leader from Kanu’s home state and local government, seeking peaceful resolution through dialogue and potential pardon was the right approach, irrespective of legal judgments.
“I’m not a supporter of the disintegration of Nigeria… It would be insensitive of me to sit here and say one of our own who has been convicted should die when we have an opportunity to discuss, negotiate, and sue for peace,” Otti stated.
