Abia State Government Orders Demolition of Structurally Unsafe Billboards

UMUAHIA – The Abia State Government has announced immediate plans to demolish billboards and outdoor advertising structures that fail integrity tests and pose dangers to public safety across the state.

The decision was communicated by Mrs. Victoria Onwubiko, Managing Director of the Abia State Structures Signage and Advertisement Agency (ABSSAA), following the completion of a comprehensive safety audit of high-rise advertising installations.

“Where any structure is found to be weak, unsafe, poorly installed, weather-compromised, or no longer fit for public exposure, the Agency will ensure that immediate remedial action is taken to prevent accidents or loss of life,” Onwubiko stated.

The government’s action comes one week after it paid ₦20 million in compensation to families affected by a recent billboard collapse in Aba, which resulted in the death of a tricycle operator and injuries to several passengers.

ABSSAA confirmed that the safety evaluation focused on structural integrity, material durability, installation quality, and overall stability—rather than mere documentation compliance.

Billboard owners and outdoor advertisers have been urged to cooperate fully with the agency, as compliance is now mandatory for continued operation in the state.
