Court Adjourns Trial Of Ansaru Terrorist Commanders To January 15

ABUJA – The Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed the trial of two detained Ansaru terrorist group commanders to January 15, 2026, following procedural delays in the case.

Justice Emeka Nwite granted the adjournment on Wednesday after defense counsel Mr. B.I. Bakum raised concerns about inadequate access to his clients and insufficient time to review evidence presented by the prosecution.

The defendants, Mahmud Usman (also known as Abu Bara’a) and Abubakar Abba (alias Mahmud Al-Nigeri), face 32-count terrorism-related charges including masterminding attacks, kidnapping for ransom, and receiving training from Mali-based terrorist group JNIM.

Federal Government prosecutors allege the commanders orchestrated several high-profile operations, including the 2022 attack on the Nigerian Army’s Wawa Cantonment in Niger State.

The court directed the defense to follow proper protocols for accessing the defendants, who remain in the custody of the Department of State Services.

This marks the second adjournment in the case, which was previously stalled in October due to the prosecution’s unavailability.
