A serious crisis is unfolding at the Abia State House of Assembly after staff members were allegedly assaulted on the orders of the House Speaker on Tuesday.
The incident occurred shortly after legislative workers suspended an ongoing strike over demands for a reviewed salary structure. Union representatives stated they agreed to call off the industrial action following an appeal from the Speaker, allowing the Governor to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill. They claim they were assured that their salary concerns would be addressed immediately after the budget presentation.
However, witnesses allege that after the Governor’s presentation, security personnel attached to the Speaker descended on staff who attempted to remind leadership of the agreement. A union representative, speaking anonymously, described the incident as “a betrayal of trust” intended to intimidate and silence agitation.
Civil society groups are calling for an independent investigation, while the Assembly’s official response is still pending. Staff are now considering reinstating their strike, warning that industrial harmony cannot be guaranteed until their demands are met and an apology is issued.
The crisis threatens to disrupt legislative operations and the implementation of the newly presented state budget.
