The long-awaited reconstruction of the Umuahia–Ikwuano–Ikot Ekpene Federal Road is a “testament to resilience,” according to Rt. Hon. Sam Onuigbo, who recently detailed his nine-year advocacy journey for the project.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Onuigbo traced his efforts back to a motion he moved in the House of Representatives on May 26, 2016, highlighting the road’s deplorable state. This action prompted initial palliative work and a flag-off of reconstruction later that year.
Despite a contract award in 2019, the project stalled due to funding challenges. A major breakthrough came in 2021 when Onuigbo successfully pushed for the road’s inclusion in the NNPCL Road Tax Credit Scheme.
Onuigbo described President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive to hand over the project to the Abia State Government for reconstruction as the “crowning moment” of the persistent advocacy.
“The same road once described as a death trap now stands as a testament to resilience and responsive governance,” he stated.
