NFF Sacks Super Falcons Technical Crew After World Cup Qualification Failure

ABUJA — The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has directed members of the Super Falcons’ technical crew to step down with immediate effect following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup .

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the NFF Executive Committee announced the decision on Monday, August 17, 2026, via a brief statement on its official X handle . The federation did not provide a specific reason for the directive, though it comes days after the Super Falcons suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the African playoffs, effectively ending their hopes of reaching the tournament in Brazil .

CDA News Nigeria reports that the decision follows a disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where the nine-time African champions were eliminated in the quarter-finals for the first time in their history after a 1-0 loss to Cameroon . The result denied Nigeria automatic World Cup qualification and forced the team into a play-off route, where South Africa delivered another blow to their qualification hopes .

The failure marks the first time Nigeria will miss the Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991 . Before Monday’s announcement, head coach Justine Madugu had apologised to Nigerians, accepting responsibility for the disappointing results in Morocco . The NFF has also inaugurated a six-member Fact-finding Committee to investigate the recent poor performances of Nigeria’s national teams, with particular focus on the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 World Cup .
