ABUJA — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has described the Osun State governorship election as a benchmark for electoral administration, with the Commission’s Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, announcing that a nationwide mock accreditation exercise will be conducted in November 2026 to assess preparedness for the 2027 General Election.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Amupitan made the announcement on Friday during separate courtesy visits by the Canadian High Commission’s Chargé d’Affaires, Mr David Sproule, and the Country Representative of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), Mr Moritz Sprenker, to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the INEC Chairman said the Osun election, conducted on August 15, 2026, demonstrated the impact of administrative planning and technological reliability, with 3,556 out of 3,763 polling units (94.5 per cent) operational for accreditation and voting by 8:30 a.m. He attributed this achievement to the performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), smooth transmission of results to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal, and proactive crisis management by field officials.
“We regard the success in Osun not as a final goal, but as the benchmark that will inform our preparations for 2027,” Amupitan stated.
Amupitan also highlighted the need for a voter revalidation exercise, noting that many Nigerians, particularly the elderly who registered as far back as 2011, would need to have their records validated. However, due to time constraints, the exercise cannot be conducted before the 2027 elections.
He identified five strategic priority areas for collaboration with Canada, including consolidating technological gains, improving electoral inclusivity, strengthening institutional capacity, combating misinformation, and supporting the mock accreditation exercise.
The INEC Chairman assured the international community of the Commission’s independence, neutrality, and commitment to democratic integrity as it strengthens its logistical capacity to deploy approximately 1.4 million ad hoc personnel across over 176,000 polling units for the 2027 General Election.
