The Benue State Government says it had no prior knowledge of the visit of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, to the state on Tuesday, CDA News Nigeria reports.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hyacinth Alia, Kula Tersoo, disclosed this in a telephone interview, reacting to reports that youths blocked Obi’s convoy at Gyado Villa along Gboko Road, preventing him from reaching Yelewata in Guma Local Government Area.
Obi was said to be travelling to Yelewata to sympathise with families affected by the June 2025 massacre in the community, where over 200 people were reportedly killed.
Tersoo said the government would have responded promptly had it been officially notified of the visit, noting that as a former governor and presidential candidate, Obi ought to have travelled with adequate federal security.
“We are not aware of his coming to the state, and if it were to be security agents that stopped him, it would have been easy for us to find out what happened,” he said.
He further dismissed suggestions that the youths acted on behalf of the state government, insisting the Alia administration does not patronise thugs and does not view Obi as a threat to the governor.
Obi later said the trip was a condolence visit rather than a campaign stop before returning to Abuja and proceeding to Jos, Plateau State.
