2027: Opposition to Name Single Presidential Candidate Before Polls — Lukman

The convener of the G100 political pressure group, Salihu Lukman, has revealed that opposition parties working in alliance with the group will announce a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, possibly only days before the poll.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), disclosed this during an appearance on Channels Television’s Hard Copy programme. He expressed confidence that the parties were committed to the process, stating the candidate could emerge “two months, some weeks to the election, or a few days to the election”.

According to him, the alliance has expanded beyond the six parties initially involved, with efforts underway to bring more parties into the fold. The G100 was formed after an all-opposition summit in Ibadan in April 2026 resolved to field a consensus candidate against the ruling APC.

CDA News Nigeria reports that Lukman identified the trust deficit among parties and candidates as the biggest obstacle, but noted that a summit on August 31 established five working groups, including one mandated to select the consensus candidate. Each party will nominate members through its candidate or leadership under agreed terms of reference.

He warned that rigid positions by supporters of Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and the Kwankwasiyya movement would only benefit the APC, stressing that “the country is superior to any individual”. He also clarified that the group would develop a minimum programme of action rather than harmonise manifestos, and confirmed he has no personal ambition to seek elective office.
