“Only President Tinubu Can Sack Me” – Wike Defiant Amid Calls for His Removal

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that only President Bola Tinubu possesses the authority to remove him from office, dismissing calls from various quarters for his dismissal.

Wike made the assertion on Sunday during a concluding “thank-you” tour in his home Local Government Area of Obio/Akpor in Rivers State. His comments come amidst heightened political tensions in Rivers State and direct calls for his sack by groups like the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), which opposes the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

“People who say, ‘sack me,’ it doesn’t lie in their mouth. If my appointor believes that I cannot offer anything again, he has the right; it is not that you should tell him,” Wike declared. He emphasized the nature of political power, stating, “Power is not dashed, you struggle for it,” and rhetorically asked, “if Donald Trump does not have the power, will he go to Venezuela to pick a president?”

The Minister’s defiance underscores the deepening rift between him and Governor Fubara, a conflict rooted in a struggle for political control of Rivers State. While the State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against the Governor, its spokesperson has denied that Wike is the instigator, describing the move as a constitutional matter separate from individual politics.

This ongoing crisis continues to draw national attention due to Rivers State’s strategic importance as an oil-rich region and a significant political bloc in Nigeria.
