TCN Declares Force Majeure After Kainji-Birnin Kebbi Tower Collapse

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared force majeure on the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi transmission line following the collapse of a tower along the route, CDA News Nigeria reports.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the line tripped at 10:44pm on Monday, September 7, 2026, and a trial reclosure attempted about 23 minutes later also failed, prompting engineers to trace the fault along the corridor.

The fault-finding exercise established that a transmission tower along the line had collapsed, disrupting bulk power supply through the corridor, which links Kainji to Birnin Kebbi in the North-West.

In a statement, TCN said it has begun mobilising personnel, equipment and other resources to the affected site to fast-track the rehabilitation of the collapsed tower and restore the line to service as quickly as possible.

The company regretted the inconvenience the disruption may cause electricity consumers and other stakeholders relying on the line, assuring the public that every effort is being made to restore normal bulk power transmission service promptly.

This is not the first time towers have collapsed along the Kainji-Birnin Kebbi corridor. TCN had earlier this year re-erected three towers that fell on the same line after a heavy windstorm, an incident that also disrupted supply to parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states.

TCN has not disclosed the cause of the latest collapse, and CDA News Nigeria will provide updates as more details emerge.
