The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned what it described as a “shameful” attack and obstruction of its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, by suspected hired thugs in Benue State on Tuesday, CDA News Nigeria reports.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said in a statement that the group which blocked Obi’s convoy was allegedly led by an aide to Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, and prevented him from entering Yelwata community, where over 270 people were reportedly massacred in 2025.
The NDC said it found it deeply troubling that a visit meant only to mourn with grieving families and offer solidarity was obstructed in such a manner, insisting that Benue residents and all Nigerians deserve a government that prioritises the protection of human life.
Obi, narrating his experience, said he arrived in Benue around 9 a.m. intending to visit affected families but was stopped by thugs chanting “Peter Obi, go back.”
The party called on the Benue State Government and security agencies to investigate the incident and prosecute those responsible, vowing that it would not be deterred from advocating for the protection of Nigerian lives.
NDC vice presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, also condemned the incident as “another dark day for our democracy” and urged President Bola Tinubu to caution state governors against actions threatening opposition figures.
The Benue State Government has denied any involvement in the blockade.
