ABUJA – The Senate has officially confirmed Major General Waheedi Shaibu as Nigeria’s new Chief of Army Staff, completing a swift confirmation process for President Bola Tinubu’s newly appointed military leadership.
The confirmation occurred Wednesday during a session at the National Assembly, where lawmakers directed Shaibu to “take a bow” and assume office immediately. The decision came just hours after the upper chamber cleared General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff.
Presiding over the session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the process as a constitutional duty to ensure capable officers lead the nation’s security agencies. “There is no need to ask them too many questions because we will be having a closed-door session with them,” Akpabio stated.
Senator Isah Jubrin, representing Kogi East, expressed strong confidence in Shaibu’s appointment, noting he had known the officer for three decades. “Shaibu is humble and takes his job very seriously. I believe he has what it takes to move Nigeria out of the security challenges the country is experiencing today,” Jubrin said.
The Senate rescheduled the confirmation process to allow the new military chiefs to assume their duties without delay.
