…Female Student Raped, Finger Cut in Second Hostel Attack in Two Weeks
Hundreds of students of the Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences, Jalingo, staged a peaceful protest on Monday following an overnight attack on a female hostel by suspected hoodlums, during which a student was allegedly raped and injured.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the students gathered at the college gate to demand urgent intervention by the Taraba State Government and security agencies to protect them from further attacks.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday when the attackers invaded the hostel, located outside the institution’s premises, and dispossessed students of phones and other valuables. A students’ union official, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, said the latest incident was the second attack within two weeks.
“The hoodlums came in their numbers and attacked one of the female students’ hostels. They raped one of the students and also carted away phones belonging to the students and other valuables. They also cut one of the students’ fingers after raping her,” the official said. The victim was subsequently taken to a hospital in the Mile 6 area of Jalingo for treatment.
The students said they had complained to the school authorities after the first attack, and the Commissioner for Tertiary Education visited the college and promised improved security, but nothing was done. They also raised concerns over the continued use of hostels located outside the college premises despite the completion of hostel facilities within the institution.
The college has seven hostels — one for male students and six for females — but students are still accommodated outside the premises, where security is considered inadequate. The attack comes days after the Taraba State Ministry of Tertiary Education reported that armed men invaded students’ hostels, stole 33 phones, and assaulted some students, recommending urgent security measures and the relocation of students to safer accommodation.
The Provost of the college, Dr Dorcas Dugule, confirmed she was handling the matter but declined to comment immediately. “I am on top of the issue. I will not speak; please give me time,” she said.
