…Sporting Director Daniel Eke Storms Training Ground With Police, Officials Arrested
Enyimba’s training session was disrupted on Monday after the club’s Sporting Director, Daniel Eke, arrived at the facility with officers of the Abia State Police Command’s Rapid Response Squad (RRS), escalating a long-running power struggle at the nine-time NPFL champions.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the incident occurred barely 24 hours after Enyimba suffered a 1-0 home defeat to NPFL newcomers Inter Lagos on Sunday, their third consecutive loss of the 2026/27 season.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that videos and pictures from the incident showed players and officials in a confused state, while club chairman Nwankwo Kanu was filmed leading the players to the RRS office. A stadium official told The PUNCH: “The chairman was about to address the players when the police officers arrived a, nd they arrested some officials. We don’t know why they arrested them, but the chairman led the players to their office”
According to an Enyimba fan/media blog, Eke’s action was allegedly a reprisal after he was attacked by some stadium officials on Sunday. The blog claimed Eke was celebrating after Enyimba dropped points, and the officials confronted him outside the gate, prompting him to return on Monday with police officers.
The crisis at the club dates back to last season when Eke was appointed sporting director by Abia State Government officials, despite Kanu naming former Nigeria international Uche Okechukwu to the same position. The tussle also spread to the technical bench when Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu and Commissioner for Sports Nwaobilor Ananaba unveiled Cameroonian coach Emmanuel Deutsch, despite Kanu’s appointment of Deji Ayeni .
A source close to the club told CDA News Nigeria that the latest tussle was part of efforts to remove Kanu, who was appointed chairman by Governor Alex Otti in 2023. “Since this commissioner came, business is not usual. They used to pester him to share monies and all of that, but he is nonchalant and doesn’t yield to their calls,” the source said.
Enyimba will host Sporting Lagos on Wednesday, seeking their first points of the season.
