The National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria (NASWDEN) has directed its members nationwide to commence industrial action on October 1, 2026, over alleged irregularities and unfair practices in the scrap-metal industry.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the association, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Stephen Igbowke Azubukwe, on behalf of National President, Comrade Alhaji Abdulfatah Adisa Ogunwale, disclosed that the strike would involve suspending the supply of scrap metals to iron-smelting companies producing iron rods and other steel products, initially running until October 15, with the potential to continue indefinitely if no agreement is reached.
According to NASWDEN’s Deputy National President, Comrade Alhaji Aminu Hassan Soja, one of the major grievances is the sudden, often unannounced reduction in prices paid for scrap metals by some steel companies, which leaves dealers who had already purchased and transported scrap at previously agreed prices facing substantial losses.
The association said dealers could lose between N3 million and N6 million on a single truckload when prices were unexpectedly slashed. NASWDEN also protested alleged deductions of between one and five percent by some companies under what it described as “extra dust,” describing the practice as an additional financial burden on already struggling dealers.
