…Library Trust Fund Moves to Digitise Records, Upgrade E-Library, Develop Bills Tracker
The National Assembly has announced plans to translate Nigeria’s laws into Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and other local languages to expand public access to legislative information.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the Executive Secretary of the National Assembly Library Trust Fund, Henry Nwawuba, disclosed this on Monday at the opening of the 2026 National Assembly Library Week in Abuja, themed “Parliamentary Memory: Connecting Records, Legislation and the People.”
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Nwawuba said the initiative aims to broaden access to legislative information and enable more citizens to understand the laws that affect their daily lives. He also announced that the Trust Fund is investing in electronic repositories, upgrading the E-Library, and developing a National Assembly Library mobile application and a Bills Tracker to allow users to follow the progress of bills through the legislative process.
Nwawuba said the library is producing infographics, audio-visual materials, and video explainers to simplify bills, laws, and legislative procedures. It will also organise public policy dialogues to deepen citizen engagement with public hearings.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by Senator Osita Ngwu, urged lawmakers to make greater use of the library, especially in an era of misinformation, disinformation, and artificial intelligence. House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, represented by House Leader Julius Ihonvbere, said the strength of a legislature should be measured not only by the laws it passes but also by how effectively it documents its activities and preserves institutional knowledge.
National Assembly Clerk Kamoru Ogunlana warned against the circulation of incomplete, outdated, altered, or unauthorised versions of bills, laws, and other parliamentary documents, noting that digital technology allows documents to be manipulated and spread to thousands within minutes.
The initiative also aims to address inconsistencies in official parliamentary documents and the circulation of fake or unauthorised copies.
