…Maida Says Data Consumption Rose 47% as Nigeria Marks 25 Years of GSM
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called for increased public and private sector investment in telecommunications infrastructure to accelerate broadband expansion and support Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the Executive Vice-Chairman and CEO of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, made the call on Tuesday at the maiden Nigeria Digital Connectivity Investment Forum in Abuja, organised in collaboration with Swedfund and Ookla.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Maida disclosed that Nigerians consumed about 1.66 million terabytes of data in July 2026, up from 1.13 million terabytes in July 2025, representing an increase of nearly 47 per cent in twelve months.
He said sustained investment was needed to expand network capacity and improve service quality, particularly as cloud computing and artificial intelligence become more widely adopted.
Maida cited the 2025 tariff adjustment, the designation of telecom infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure, and engagement with state governments on Right of Way charges as measures aimed at improving the investment environment.
In her keynote address, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, said digital connectivity had become economic infrastructure critical to trade and investment, noting that telecommunications accounted for more than nine per cent of Nigeria’s GDP in the first quarter of 2026.
The forum, themed “Unblocking Infrastructure Investments Through Data, Transparency and Partnership,” brought together government officials, investors, development finance institutions, and industry operators.
