Nigeria @66: NLC Demands New Minimum Wage, Lower Petrol Prices

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has demanded a new minimum wage and lower petrol prices as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence anniversary.

CDA News Nigeria reports that the union said petrol now sells for N1,430 per litre or higher in major cities, and for far more in remote areas.

“The surge in transportation costs drives up the prices of food, school fees, rent, and nearly every necessity of life, while nominal wages remain stagnant,” the NLC said.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the union urged the Federal Government to act urgently on how fuel costs feed into transportation and other parts of the economy. “Without cutting this chain, any effort to ease the suffering of the people is futile,” it said.

The NLC also demanded the immediate implementation of a nationwide wage award covering workers in the federal, state and local governments. It described the measure as an emergency response to declining real incomes rather than a form of charity.

The demand comes as many households struggle with rising living costs. Workers in particular say their pay no longer stretches as far as it once did.

The Federal Government has not responded to the demands at the time of this report. CDA News Nigeria will update this story as the government or other stakeholders react.
