WASHINGTON D.C. – President Donald Trump has announced the immediate termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali immigrants in Minnesota, escalating his administration’s sweeping immigration crackdown.
In a social media post on Friday, Trump declared he was “hereby terminating, effective immediately” the program that protects Somali holders from deportation, accusing “Somali gangs” of harming locals and demanding they be “sent back to where they came from.”
The decision affects approximately 705 approved TPS holders and could impact up to 4,300 potentially eligible individuals. Minnesota hosts one of the largest Somali diaspora communities globally, many of whom fled decades of conflict in their home country.
TPS for Somalis was first granted in 1991 and most recently extended in July 2024 due to ongoing dangerous conditions in Somalia, where Al-Shabaab insurgents continue operations. The move follows similar TPS terminations for Afghans, Haitians, and Venezuelans, and is expected to face legal challenges.
