a woman, Mary Christiana Oga of Imaje in Yala Local Government Area, has been confirmed dead, while several others were critically injured in a stampede during an empowerment programme in Cross River State.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the tragic incident occurred on Thursday during the distribution of empowerment items, including food, at an event organised by Mrs Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, the wife of Governor Bassey Otu, in Ogoja.
The victims were rushed to the General Hospital, Ogoja, where doctors pronounced Christiana dead upon arrival. The injured are currently receiving medical treatment.
This incident highlights the growing desperation and severe economic hardship across the country, which has led to chaotic scenes at relief and empowerment events. Similar stampedes have been reported recently, raising serious concerns about crowd control and safety protocols at such gatherings.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the tragic event, but investigations are expected to commence to determine the circumstances surrounding the stampede.
