Internal Crisis Sparks Anxiety in Osun PDP Ahead of Governorship Race

OSOGBO – A deepening factional crisis within Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is causing significant anxiety among its members in Osun State.

The internal conflict, which has led to a suspended national convention and rival leadership groups at the national level, is raising concerns about the smooth re-nomination of the state’s incumbent Governor, Ademola Adeleke.

Party members fear the national dispute could spill into the state’s gubernatorial primary. There are worries that a rival faction might sponsor a candidate to challenge Governor Adeleke, potentially leading to damaging legal battles similar to those seen in the 2022 election cycle.

Specifically, some members point to the faction led by former Governor Nyesom Wike as a potential source of opposition to Governor Adeleke’s re-election bid.

In response to the growing unease, the Osun State chapter of the PDP has issued a statement urging calm. The party’s chairman, Sunday Bisi, assured members that the national leadership is handling the court matter and encouraged them to continue grassroots mobilization for the 2026 election.
