ABUJA, Nigeria – In response to recent threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump, the Nigerian government has stated that President Bola Tinubu is “well ahead” of the situation.
The statement from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, comes after Trump redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and threatened to halt aid over allegations of Christian persecution.
Onanuga pointed to a recent address by President Tinubu to his new service chiefs as proof of proactive measures. In the speech, Tinubu demanded “no more excuses” and decisive action against emerging armed groups.
“We must not allow these new threats to fester,” Tinubu was quoted as saying. “Let us smash the new snakes right in the head.”
The Nigerian leader urged the military to be proactive and innovative in tackling the evolving security threats across the country, promising full support to ensure results.
This exchange highlights growing international scrutiny, led by U.S. figures like Senator Ted Cruz, on Nigeria’s internal security and religious dynamics.
