ABUJA – The Federal Government has accused foreign lobbyists, particularly in the United States, of driving what it calls a false narrative of “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the allegation during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, linking the lobbyists to influencers of criminal activities within the country.
This statement comes as the United States redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious persecution—a move the Nigerian government strongly rejects.
Idris acknowledged Nigeria faces serious security challenges but insisted they affect all religious groups equally. “Any narrative suggesting that the Nigerian state is failing to take action against religious attacks is based on misinformation or faulty data,” the Minister stated.
He defended the government’s security record, announcing that since May 2023, security forces have “neutralised more than 13,500 terrorists,” arrested over 17,000 suspects, and rescued more than 9,850 kidnap victims.
