US Congress Launches Sweeping Investigation Into Nigeria’s Alleged Christian Genocide

WASHINGTON D.C. – The United States Congress has initiated a comprehensive investigation into allegations of Christian genocide in Nigeria, marking a significant escalation of international scrutiny on the West African nation’s religious violence crisis.

The investigation, launched by the House Foreign Affairs Committee, will examine systematic attacks on Christian communities across Nigeria, particularly in the Middle Belt and northern regions where religious violence has claimed thousands of lives in recent years.

This congressional probe follows repeated appeals from international human rights organizations and religious groups, including the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), which has consistently described the situation as an ongoing “Christian genocide.”

The investigation will gather testimonies from survivors, religious leaders, and security experts, and review documented evidence of attacks on churches, Christian communities, and religious leaders.

A congressional aide familiar with the matter stated, “This is not just a hearing; it’s a full-scale investigation into whether the violence against Christian communities meets the legal definition of genocide and what response the international community should mount.”

The outcome could potentially lead to sanctions against individuals or entities found responsible for perpetrating or enabling the violence, as well as recommendations for restructuring U.S. security assistance to Nigeria.
