Taraba Speaker, 15 PDP Assembly Members Defect To APC

JALINGO – The Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, John Kizito Bonzena, and 15 other members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The mass defection, confirmed on Tuesday, represents a significant political shift in the state’s assembly and deals a major blow to the opposition PDP’s strength in Taraba.

With this development, the APC now commands a strong majority in the state legislature, fundamentally altering the balance of power in the state.

The defectors cited various reasons for their move, including the need for stronger alignment with the federal government and what they described as “internal challenges” within the state’s PDP structure.

This political realignment comes amid similar defections across the country as the 2027 general elections approach, with the APC continuing to absorb prominent politicians from opposition parties.

The PDP in Taraba State has yet to issue an official statement regarding the mass departure of its assembly members.
