NFF Files FIFA Protest Over DR Congo Player Eligibility, Keeps World Cup Hopes Alive

ABUJA – Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have received a significant lifeline following an official protest to FIFA over the eligibility of DR Congo players.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has submitted a formal petition alleging that DR Congo violated FIFA regulations by fielding up to six players who did not properly renounce their previous citizenships, a requirement under Congolese law which does not recognize dual nationality.

DR Congo had defeated the Super Eagles on penalties in November to secure Africa’s slot in the Intercontinental Playoffs. However, NFF Secretary General Dr. Mohammed Sanusi stated that players like Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who hold European passports, may have been fraudulently cleared.

“FIFA was deceived into clearing them,” Sanusi claimed. “What we are saying is that it was fraudulent.” He explained that while FIFA’s clearance is based on submitted passports, the failure to comply with DR Congo’s national laws constitutes a breach.

If FIFA upholds Nigeria’s protest, the Super Eagles could be reinstated into the playoff pathway, scheduled for March 2026, potentially overturning their earlier elimination.

Disclaimer: This report is based on an official protest filed by the Nigeria Football Federation. The allegations are currently under review by FIFA, and no ruling has been made. The outcome will determine the final standings and qualification.
