Twelve persons have been confirmed dead, with two others injured, following a ghastly road accident along the Ejule-Enugu highway in Kogi State on Friday night.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in the state, Mr. Tenimu Etuku, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Lokoja on Saturday, describing it as “fatal and very unfortunate.”
According to the FRSC, the crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the Iboko community, Idah Local Government Area. It involved an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus belonging to Romchi Mass Transit, which was travelling from Abuja to the eastern part of the country.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the bus rammed into a stationary, faulty articulated vehicle due to excessive speed.
Among the 12 deceased was a child. The two injured survivors were rushed to the Mercy of Jesus Hospital in Ejule for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased have been deposited in a morgue.
Sector Commander Etuku expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and reiterated the dangers of speeding and reckless driving. He urged motorists to exercise patience and adhere strictly to traffic rules, especially during the festive season when long-distance travel increases.
