Residents of Jabo town in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State have recounted scenes of panic and confusion during a United States airstrike late Friday, with many initially mistaking the descending fiery object for an air crash.
Abubakar Shehu Jabo, a resident and Information Officer for the LGA, said the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. “Because of the loud noise and the speed at which the burning object descended, many of us thought it was an air crash,” he explained.
Local leader Sarkin Fawan Jabo, Muhammadu Abubkar, reassured that the area has long been peaceful and has never harbored terrorists or bandits, recalling only one kidnapping incident in 2000.
A resident from Bargini village described the explosion as devastating, with families startled by a thunderous blast, thick smoke, and flames that caused villagers to flee in panic.
The incident has raised broader concerns about the impact of foreign military operations on civilian communities and the need for clear communication and security assurances.
