Abia APC, Umuahia South Council Chairman Clash Over Arrest of E-Registration Agent

UMUAHIA – A political dispute has erupted in Abia State after the All Progressives Congress (APC) accused the Mayor of Umuahia South Local Government Area, Mr. Chinedu Enwereuzor, of orchestrating the arrest of one of its electronic registration agents.

In a communiqué on Wednesday, APC stakeholders in the LGA alleged that their agent, Chidera Emenike, was arrested on January 24 while conducting the party’s e-registration exercise at Ahiukwu Ward 1, Amizi-Olokoro. They claimed she was detained at the Ubakala Police Division on the mayor’s directive before being released.

The APC described the incident as an “unacceptable and direct affront,” warning against the intimidation of its officials and calling on Governor Alex Otti to call his appointees to order.

Mayor Enwereuzor categorically denied the allegations. He stated that the individual was only “invited by the police for questioning” following reports from residents about people collecting Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) and Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) under the guise of APC registration.

“Nobody was harassed, victimised or beaten,” Enwereuzor asserted. He explained that his intervention was to prevent a potential security breach, alleging the form recovered did not bear the APC logo but was titled “Federal Government Empowerment Form.”

While affirming support for lawful political activities, the mayor vowed to resist any action endangering residents or involving the collection of their personal documents. The Abia State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
